History of the Yacimiento de las Trincheras de la Civil War in the forest of Sant Miquel de Abrera

This defensive complex, formed by several lines of trenches that go up the slope, four shelters attached to the trench located at the lowest level, and three machine gun nests scattered along the southern flank, must be framed in the last days of the Civil War Spanish (1936-1939), specifically, in the context of the so-called offensive of Catalonia, a military campaign ordered by the head of the rebel factional forces, General Franco, which took place between December 23, 1938 and February 13, 1939. This was the last great confrontation of the conflict, and sentence thus the defeat of the republican legality, which was no longer able to articulate any resistance. The objective of this operation was to destroy what was left of the army of the legitimate Government of the Republic, in retreat towards the north and Barcelona after the defeat in the Battle of the Ebro, and thus close the border with France to prevent the escape of people.
