Espai de la Terrissa
The Ceramics Center immerses us in the art of mastering water, earth, and fire, and introduces us to a tradition that remains alive thanks to new initiatives in the fields of craftsmanship, design, and industry. It features the town’s last wood-fired kiln for firing terracotta, belonging to the Sedó Pottery, and a collection of folk and utilitarian pieces from the town’s various terracotta workshops.
Since the 16th century, the transformation of clay into objects has been a continuous activity in the Esparreguera area, making it one of Catalonia’s most renowned centers for ceramic production.
The activity originated in the medieval period, when workshops and kilns were in use by various producers until the 18th century. It was in the 19th century that production reached its peak. Up to twenty pottery centers have been identified, spaces that adapted to the necessary mechanization without losing their artisanal character.
